Soooo... about that maternity wardrobe...

Wednesday, June 19, 2019

Lady Green Bees... let's take a quick moment to discuss maternity wardrobes.  Before getting pregnant, I said that I'd be able to get through a pregnancy with all of my everyday clothing.  I tend to wear things that are too big for me and I love to wear all of these boho/harem pants that come with elastic waistbands, so I figured I'd be all set, right?

... well, I've watched a TON of YouTube videos about all of those wonderful things that happen during pregnancy that no one tells you about and I was shocked to find that many of those videos kind of parody my thought about being able to make it through all 9 months without having to buy anything specifically designed for a watermelon belly, but by the time the second or third kid comes around, a huge bin of maternity clothes need to be taken out of storage.

So here's where I am now:  The minimalist in me doesn't want to NEED to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe as the third trimester comes around the corner.  The minimalist in me is also still not sure that this will be necessary.  I'm already in my second trimester and am not showing at all.  Well... I am to myself, but I think that's just because I'm bigger than I've ever been before, but if you don't know that there's a baby on board, I don't think that you'd guess it.  At this point, I've opened myself up to knowing that I'll need to buy some new bras here soon (I'm finally headed towards not being a solid A-cup!!!  Take THAT everyone who has teased me my whole life for being completely flat chested!) and I will need some maternity skinny jeans, since Tater Tot will arrive in the winter and my boho trousers will be too chilly for Colorado at that time of year.

Thoughts?  Input?  See what happens when it happens?

In the meantime, I've tried to find pieces that are nice and stretchy.  This new organic cotton top from Synergy Organic is actually a tunic with a really fun hemline.  It looked super groovy tucked into these thrifted trousers, but I'm going to wear it again in a few weeks with skinny jeans (probably with the belly band SunStars got me... he is so good...) and some really fun sandals so I can show it off tunic-style.  I love that it is expandable and is such a great layering piece.  I'm hoping to still be able to wear it in a number of different ways in the months to come! son

What's sustainable about this outfit?

: the tank is organic and fair trade
: the joggers were thrifted
: the bracelets are handmade
: the necklace is handmade
: the cover up is handmade and fair trade

  1. I think 95% of the maternity clothing I bought was secondhand, either from ThredUP or my local Clothes Mentor. It saved me a lot of money, and I felt less guilty about buying such temporary clothing secondhand. I also kept my dedicated maternity wardrobe to pretty much the bare minimum. By my third trimester, I didn't care that I was wearing the same 5 outfits every week, haha.
