Earth Month and Oceana...

... anyone else have "Baby Shark" totally stuck in their heads now?

It's been on a loop over here lately, and that's because Stellan made his very first symbolic animal adoption! He is the proud new contributor to the conservation of bonnethead sharks with one of our new favorite earth-saving non-profits:

This non-profit organization was founded in 2001 to help make oceans as abundant as they were before over-fishing and plastic pollution started causing a negative impact on the ocean's ability to thrive.  They use science and facts to develop solutions for ocean preservation and have helped to ban the sale of shark fins in Canada, pushed New York to prohibit offshore drilling, helped Spain to form the second-largest protected marine national park in the world just in the the last year.  Charity Watch gives Oceana a rating of A-, finding that they are able to spend 73% of donations on programs, as opposed to overhead, and that it costs Oceana just $7 to raise $100.

A big initiative that Oceana is trying to support is the push for sustainable fishing.  Their research has found that restoring the ocean can sustainably feed 1 billion people a healthy seafood meal a day, and while I am actually unable to eat seafood due to allergies, my love of feeding hungry people can see what a hugely awesome impact this would have on the world.  Their website includes a super user-friendly guide into sustainable seafood, including recipes and something a bit more up my alley: a guide for ways to help the ocean.  One of my favorite tips: Explore the ocean, because people will protect the things they love.

Sadly, we had to cancel Stellan's first trip to the ocean to help contain that-virus-that-I-simply-cannot-name-any-longer, so we decided to try to bring the ocean to Stelly by way of making a donation. Oceana has options to make one-time gifts, monthly gifts, donate through their shop, and via symbolic adoption.  Since it is our hope that Stellan will grow up knowing that his actions can make a difference, but want to make this concept a bit more tangible for him while he's super young, we opted for a symbolic animal adoption.  He received a certificate and a super soft, adorable, well-made plush that we hope he will treasure as he grows.  Judging by their smiles, I think it's pretty safe to say that he and Mr. Bonnethead have gotten off to a flying start!

If you're looking for ways to help the world, even though it's kind of on lockdown, I most definitely recommend exploring Oceana to see all of the wonderful work they are doing for the planet and help them out, if you can!
