Yes, my dearest Green Bees, I am back at trying to green my beauty routine! I've had great success with finding sustainable shampoos, conditioners, body washes, and body oils, but I wanted to dig in a bit deeper and find more non-consumable products to replace those pesky plastic throw-aways we're so used to in the bathroom.
That being said, it was rather serendipitous that I found Weighted. This Colorado Springs-based shop is run by active duty Air Force member, Satomi. Yes... I'm fairly certain that we were destined to meet (in the case that you're new here, I worked for the Air Force in Germany for about 3 years and recently moved to the Denver area). Satomi is a bit of a soul sister and shares my belief that the products we use should be sustainable, biodegradable, and should make as little impact on the global footprint as possible.
Her shop stocks all sorts of products, from kitchen products like pan scrubbers and stainless steel food savers, to a line of eco-friendly makeup in bamboo containers, she's got it all. She was totally supportive of my desire to upgrade my eco health and beauty routine and sent me the Albatross safety razor and a Lunette menstrual cup from her extensive selection of bath and body goodies.
Let me tell you: the experience of using these items was a bit daunting at first.
The razor has some nice heft to it. It's totally unlike those gnarly plastic toss-out razors we've become so used to. This razor comes with an envelope of individually-wrapped blades that are super easy to insert. You just screw the handle back on and everything is good to go. Like I said before, my first experience using this razor was a bit daunting, but let's get real: it's called a SAFETY razor for a reason! It is actually quite simple to use and I was pleased with the closeness of the shave. When I remembered that the majority of the parts of this razor, aside from the blades, will last me forever and will save me countless cash since I no longer need to buy disposables and I'm totally sold!
The razor is good for guys and gals, but ladies, I need to level with you now. Yep. I'm talking about ways to green up that time of the month. I've featured washable/re-usable pads here before, but as those do tend to wear out after a while, I wanted to try something different and I ended up with the Lunette menstrual cup. This, too, was a slightly daunting experience the first couple of times I had it in action, but once I got the hang of it, it truly became a game changer.
This particular menstrual cup is made of soft and flexible silicone. It can be folded in a number of different ways to help it go in smoothly and can be left in really almost all day if you so choose. I'd recommend that the first few times you're test driving it to be at home just in case, but stick with it!
Menstrual cups like these can save thousands of single-use products from being flushed or sent to the landfill each year and since they are easy to clean and keep sanitary for several years, they pay for themselves in just a couple of months. Once again, this green health swap can make a huge impact on the amount of waste we create AND can help keep your bank account looking more sustainable!
