History is Herstory, too...

Monday, September 16, 2013

One of the coolest things about living in Europe after having lived 99% of my life in the United States is that there is so much more history here.  This is not to say that there isn't history in the states.  Sure, you can hop in the car and zoom down Route 66 to the Grand Canyon and pretend to be one of the great pioneers of the Wild West, but for real... I love across the street from an underground tunnel system that was commissioned by Hitler in the late 1930s.  How cool is that?

Soldier Boy had heard that there was a bunker in our town and discovered the general area in which it is on a run when he first moved here, but his exploration ended after that.  I; however, set out on a mission: a mission to explore the underground, and so, tout le monde, I googled like I've never googled before.

Ok, it was actually pretty easy to find info on the bunker (thanks fellow bloggers!) and figure out who owned it and how to contact him.  A week later, and these historical tunnels were opened up to yours truly and a ragtag group of kindred underground tunnel explorers.  Once Hitler was done with the tunnels, they were turned over to the Americans and served as a safehouse during the Cold War and when that ended, the current owner was handed a huge ring of keys and told he could have the land (which was originally his grandfather's and was used for mining and sand collection) back.  He hasn't done a thing to preserve the tunnels and so we got to see them in all their peely-paint, mildewed, makeshift electrical-need-to-carry-a-pocket-torch glory.

It was magical.  Yes.  Really.  Even though everything is all 1970s military chic, it was cool.  And yes, I ghost hunted a bit.  I couldn't help it!

Since I moved halfway around the world to live with someone who wears camo just about every day of the week, I figured I should suit up in some camo of my own for this military-esque experience.  Thanks, Charlotte Russe, for making that happen!

    1. It definitely gives you perspective to visit places that you've only read about. I can't wait to get to Normandie and Berlin and even to see some more concentration camps. We went to Dachau on one of my visits out here a year or so ago, and it was a mind-blowing experience.

  12. Oh my gosh this is awesome! I'm from Poland and we had bunkers in the woods by the beach. SO COOL!!! There's nothing like European history. There's some awesome US history too, but European is just amazing.

    1. Isn't it awesome? I just feel like there is so much MORE history here than in the states just because people have lived here for so much longer. I can't get enough of it!

  13. I never thought I'd live somewhere quite like here... across the street from Hitler's underground tunnel system. Nope, but now I can cross that off my bucket list. Or... add it to the bucket list for the pure simple pleasure of crossing it off!
