To bang, or not to bang…

Friday, January 3, 2014

Well, tout le monde, the time came again for me to answer the age old question: To bang or not to bang.  I've pretty much always had bangs, thanks to a ginormous forefivehead.  I've grown them out a number of times, but I think I look silly, and so the bang ensues.  Last week, in London, I came to the conclusion that after nearly 6 months, it was time to get a haircut.  Yes… I really waited that long.  Damn the Frugal Francie in me for that!  I used to work in a salon and got my hair cut for free, so I have a hard time justifying dropping $100 on a trim.  It was my brilliant plan to go to a salon academy and pay 5 quid for a cut, but alas, it was winter break, and my mum pressured me into going big and spending half of my Christmas money on a trim.

Ok… enough of that… what I really want to chat about here is how scary and awkward it is to have your bangs trimmed.  If you have bangs or have had them, please sound off and let me know if I'm crazy for feeling this way or if you've been there/done that!

So… obviously, when getting your bangs trimmed, the hairdresser is right in your face with shiny silver snippers essentially pointed at your eyeballs.  Scared yet?  Well, I have this awful inability to keep my eyes closed.  I want to watch what is going on and with clippers snapping right in your eyes, it's difficult not to flinch… which I've done… and ended up with a really avant grade asymmetrical bang!  Oops!  So now, I find that I'm constantly blinking whenever I have my bangs trimmed.  I'll keep my eyes closed while the snippers are there, but as soon as I hear them stop clipping, I open my eyes which usually makes me look like a freak, because the hairdresser is just realigning things and moved in for another wave of bang-attack.

The other bit about having bangs trimmed is breathing.  I am a nose breather, so it usually doesn't bug me to have teeny tiny little snips of hair flying all over the space in front of my face, but one time, I must have yawned or coughed or something and I ended up with a hairball down the gullet.  Now when I have my bangs trimmed, I hold my breath.

Anyone else feel me on this?

… also, I know I've just written a novella on bangs, but I have a few orders of business to clear up.  It is Friday, which means that I should be giving ya'll something fun to win, but I have not one, not two, not three (yes, I know that is the same link 3 times, but there are 3 different prizes on that page!), but four giveaways on now, so I'm taking the week (or possibly the next few weeks off).  Never fear, I already have more lined up, but would like to get back in touch with actually communicating with people and not just receiving hoards of comments about freebies!

  3. I love the scarf! I've not had bangs until I was about 8. I'd like to get them but I am so bad at keeping up with things I know I'd never go back to the hair dresses to get them redone. Doom

    1. I never do either. I always cut them myself, but after nearly 6 months, everything ends up looking sloppy and ridiculous!

  4. I totally agree! I used to have bangs and was always afraid the person cutting my hair was going to cut my face off. (Totally irrational, but those cold scissors on my forehead bring out the irrational in me, apparently . . . )
Your haircut looks great, by the way!

    1. Thank you! Isn't it scary? I'm glad I'm not the only person to get nervous with a pair of scissors that close to my eyeballs!

  7. Your bangs look adorable, dear! I totally understand how you feel about getting them trimmed. I am so terrified of hairdressers that I learned how to do it myself. I've been cutting my hair since high school and I don't know if I could trust anyone else with it :)

    1. I wish I could cut all of my hair myself! I don't trust myself because my hair is so fine, you'd totally be able to see all of my mistakes! I'd end up with some sort of wonky fringe at the back of my head!

  11. I think my next cut will include bangs. I've been obsessed with Alexandra's bangs on Lovely Pepa and I think I'm finally going to take the plunge.

  12. Haha.. I love that you wrote a book on bangs.. I've not enjoyed bangs that much.. it's great for like a day and then I'm annoyed becuase they're in my face and bla bla bla..... you get the idea... hah! You look lovely however and do whatever you need to do to get that hair how you want it.. it's so depressing to a woman to not be happy with her hair! I mean it's all about priorities!! Have a happy weekend!

    1. They do get annoying! I have to get them at just the right length so they look chic when they are down, but when I'm teaching, I can put them back!

  13. haha, I know exactly what you mean! I used to be the same when I had bangs. I thankfully don't have them anymore, because I find them to be a lot of work - especially when you have curls.

but you miss are rocking it :)

    1. Ooooh, I wonder what it would be like to have real curls! I have a funky colic that makes my bangs do funny things sometimes, but I have no idea how they would react if my hair were actually curly!

  21. I have moved passed the question of bangs and my new hair quandary is whether or not to get a full chop (eeek!). I'm thinking no. For now. Your bangs look great!

    1. Ok… what I have to say about that is really think it through. I usually chop every summer to donate, but in 2011, I went for a pixie cut. I'm really small and have no ta-tas at all and I looked like a little boy… and I am STILL growing that cut out and it's been almost 3 years!

  23. Stick with the bangs! I love the concept of bangs, they just make everyone look so je ne sais quoi. But, I totally feel you on not wanting to spend $100 on a trim. It's been a year since cutting my hair since the hair cutters in NYC are insanely expensive and the teaching schools don't cut curly hair - which is crazy cause how will they learn how to cut curly locks.
