A walk through history...

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

Hooray for finally getting out into the world after 2 months of no travel!  Yes, tout le monde, as I told you the other day, our trip to Paris turned out as a total failure.  For real.  If I squinted and contorted my body around a tree at the top of the hill in Meudon, I could see the Eiffel Tower.

After a night of frustrated "sleep" (as in, tossing and turning because it was so ridiculous to be so darn close to Paris with no way to get there), we hopped into the car and headed West.  First stop Bayeux, where we saw the biggest tree I think I've ever seen and also the longest embroidered tapestry!  Srsly, Google the Bayeux tapestry.  It's about a gazillion years old, so I couldn't photograph it, but it's definitely worth checking out!

Our final stop for the day was Normandy.  It was the 4th of July and we arrived at the American Military Cemetery just before 1700.  The National Anthem played and Soldier Boy saluted (which gets me every time).  Some students laid flowers at the foot of the WWII memorial and taps played.  It was a bit surreal to be in such a place at such a time on such a day with Omaha Beach just off to our side.  The 70th anniversary of D-Day was just last month and even amidst all of the museums and reminders of the way the beach looked during the invasion, it is so calm today. But at such an amazing cost.  There are 9,386 American soldiers buried in this cemetery alone.

  1. Love this simple but chic outfit. Being that close to history would have made me emotional as well. It's hard not to be.

    1. Why thank you! I stole it out of Soldier Boy's dresser when he wasn't looking! When I got dressed in the morning, he gave me the most awkward sideways glance and said "Hey! That's mine!"

  6. I have been to Normandy before and even though it is no paris, it is filled with historical culture. Everyone is obsessed with updated fashion, but lose the grasp on where it comes from. You have captured a little bit of history well and you look fabulous while doing it.

  13. Thank you! The cemetery bit was a bit chilling… especially with Soldier Boy saluting at my side and a smattering of other older men saluting in civilian dress. Paris was a hot mess. Our GPS sent us to Luxembourg, Belgium and then shut off, so I navigated us to the house where we were staying just outside of Paris. We arrived around 9 PM, bought train tickets, and then found out that the trains into the city weren't running!
