Think about it Thursday…

“We believe that defining, analyzing and studying problems is the way to make a better world.  It’s the dominant mind-set of Western culture.  This context- that life is a set of problems to be solved- may actually limit any chance of the future being different from the past.  The interest we have in problems is so intense that at some point we take our identity from those problems.  Without them, it seems like we wouldn’t know who we are as a community.  Many of the strongest advocates for change would lose their identity if the chance they desired occurred"- Kinfolk Magazine, Volume Sixteen

The first time that I read this, I wholeheartedly agreed with it.  Do we use too much electricity?  Do we, mostly as Americans, eat too much junk food?  Are there parts of the world that are seriously lacking in food of any sort?  Yes.  I absolutely believe that these are genuine problems that we face in the world.

Is it bad that there are a ton or problems in the world?  Probably.  But if there were never any problems in the world, what would life be like?

Probably pretty boring, but on the flip side, I don’t think I could justify spending my whole entire life, totally and completely dedicated to solving one problem.  This one problem would

If I hadn’t had to pay for college out of pocket, would I be as good of a saver as I am now?  Probably not.  If I didn’t love dance the way I do, would I still have knee problems?  Maybe, but they most likely wouldn’t be what they are now.  If I weren’t so dedicated to finding ways to supplement my income (and subsequently lose sleep) would I travel as much as I do?  Absolutely not.

So do I believe that there are problems in the world that need to be studied and analyzed before being solved?  Absolutely.  Do I believe that solving some of the problems will change the future?  I’d say that I do.  But do I think that any given person should dedicate 100% of their being to solving one problem?  Not so much.  You'd go insane living life like that!

I think that people should help their fellow humans, feed a few animals, pick up some garbage and do what they can to keep some semblance of harmony in the world, but reserve their sanity.  Loss of sanity will surely lead to an imbalance of the aforementioned harmony and that will just create more issues.

What do ya'll think?
