The Time Hop app has been great fun for me over the last year or so. It's always interesting to see if/how I have changed at all over the years and while in many ways, I am the same person with just a few more years under my belt, something I've noticed is that the longer I've been out of school, the further I've drifted from reading and English and poetry.
And so, since I used to be totally jazzed about reading difficult books and thinking critically and interpreting poems, I thought I'd try to get re-connected to that aspect of my life. I found this little gem of a poem by Charles Bukowski that I think is especially fitting (and easy to understand) after the tragic events of last weekend and it also makes a nice companion to these photos. Here is "The Laughing Heart:"
your life is your life
don't let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can't bead death but
