#SustainableSunday with Ikuru...

Sunday, July 3, 2016

It's true.  When I grow up, I want to be a wild flower.

Do you ever end up driving around aimlessly and find the coolest places to hang?  I definitely did.  I've been doing lots of summer babysitting that has me driving all over the place in the general area in which I grew up, but kind of outside of the places that I'd routinely visit, so I'm suddenly finding all these really fun nooks and crannies!  This is behind an old hardware store that I visited all the time with my dad as a youngster.  It's since closed down, but makes for a fun backdrop!

I'm getting off topic with my appreciation of the little things...  it's #SustainableSunday!  I have got to tell you about the dress I'm wearing here!  It's from a company called Ikuru (I found them on Instagram).  This company is based in Mozambique ("Ikuru" means "strength" in the Macau language) and seeks to empower local women by using local "capulana" fabrics to create beautiful clothing for ethical consumers around the globe!

The hope is that by creating beautiful clothing, local women who would otherwise not have an income, health care, child care or education can break out of the cycle of poverty and create a better lives for themselves and their children.

I certainly love the dress they sent me!  It was perfect for a day of babysitting and will be perfect to incorporate into my teacher wardrobe.  I'm also planning on trying to wear it as a scarf since I've been so into re-purposing my clothing lately (see how I wore a skirt as a scarf HERE and see how I wore a scarf as a shirt HERE).

What do you think?  What's your favourite Ikuru print

What's sustainable about this outfit?
: the dress is fair trade
: the bracelet is fair trade
: the necklace is fair trade
