#SustainableSunday re-purposing garments...

Sunday, October 16, 2016

Hello, friends, and a very happy #SustainableSunday to you!  This week, I want to quickly chat about re-purposing your clothes.  I often hear people say that it's not worth the time it takes to turn a shirt into something else or to mend something that's been ripped or torn, but if you think about it... re-purposing your clothes can be an incredibly quick and easy process.

For example, the skirt I'm wearing here used to be a maxi skirt.  One unfortunate day, I stepped on the hem and it ripped.  My first thought was "Ahhhhhh!  My pretty, long, twirly skirt is ruined forever!" but then I chilled out and realized that yes... I know how to work a sewing machine.  I trimmed off the ripped end, put a new hem in the skirt, and used the salvageable leftover fabric to make re-usable gift bags.

And that's not the only re-purposed garment in this outfit.  Yes, my eco-friends, this top was found in the bottom of one of SB's boxes of childhood clothing.  It was about 3 sizes too big for him and we debated putting it in the donate pile, but the graphic eagle design really caught my eye and I decided that I'd just cut the neck, cut off the sleeves, and cut the hem (it is actually an uneven hem, but since it's tucked in, you can't tell).

My point is that re-purposing doesn't have to be a huge operation.  It can be simple, but you can extend the life of a garment that is already in existence in addition to gaining a wardrobe piece that feels new, but that you didn't have to spend a dime on!

Win, win!

What's sustainable about this outfit?
: the top was re-purposed
