Skirting the issue...

... the issue that concerns how bloody hard it is to get food in Europe.  Seriously.  I already kind of understood how European people tend to be smaller... you know... more active lifestyle and such, but now I realize that it IS also about food!

At home, in my lovely little McSuburb in the states, we have 2 McDonald's restaurants in addition to Panda Express, Chipotle, Pizza Hut, generic fast food restaurant, etc. and in the next town (5 minutes down the road) they have the exact same selection of around-the-clock food.  This doesn't even take into consideration all the gas stations and convenience stores and open-late grocery stores, plus those random vending machines that have popped up all over the place over the last decade or so.  It is nearly impossible to leave your house in America and not be able to find food 24/7.

... This; however, is not the case in Europe.  When the restaurant is closed, it is closed.  There are no vending machines.  There are no convince stores.  Even hotels don't have snack bars.  If you don't get food before town closes up for the night, you're just not going to eat... and that is why we ate one scoop of ice cream each in Liechtenstein... FOR DINNER!

Yes, tout le monde, we spent a lovely day driving through Italy and into the Swiss Alps (which is terrifying!  See video below!) and wound our way into Liechtenstein.  The country is rather small (from our estimation, it is roughly one tall mountain that is bordered by a rather lovely river) and we stayed all the way up and over the top of the mountain.  The concierge in our hotel was leaving for the day as we arrived and the restaurant was closet (at 5 PM).  There was only one restaurant in town that was open, but it was incredibly expensive and we only had 7.20 in Swiss Francs.  All we could afford on the menu was one scoop of ice cream each.  That was it.  Luckily, I had some TicTacs, so that was our dessert!

Voila!  This is how Europeans stay tiny!  In any case, please enjoy some absolutely breathtaking scenery from our drive!

  1. Lovely post, and yes it is like that in Europe haha. You just need to do some grocery shopping, even when you're on holiday.

    1. Seriously! In the states, when I go on roadtrips, I pack a cooler and leave it in the car, so I've always got food... probably should have done the same on this trip!

    1. Absolutely stunning views, but I wish our car were a bit smaller! It was so hard to make the tight turns up and down the mountains!

  4. I know exactly what you mean about the food situation. I'm from the UK, we have a few mcdonalds around in each city but not all of them are 24 hours and most takeaway places close about 11/12 in the evening, so yeah it's best to eat early and make sure you're full!

    1. I can't believe how big of an adjustment this was for me. In the states, I eat small meals/snacks all the time (like 6 times a day)! On this trip, I was lucky to get two actual meals in!

  7. "The hills are alive with the sound of terror!" Ha! For the viewer, that video is quite entertaining. However, I think I'd feel the same as you if I were also in that car!

    1. So scary! The views kind of helped... it was one of those, "If I die now, at least these views are the last thing I'll see" sorts of situations.

  13. I don't like Taco Bell, but I'll never again take for granted how easy one is to find in the states! McDonald's helped us out quite a bit on this trip!
