Monday blues...

Monday, March 12, 2018

In his song, "My Mind is For Sale," Jack Johnson sings that "I heard that Monday's just a word we say every seven times around."  Since I've been spending so much time on the West coast, I've had a lot of JJ playing (it just goes with the weather and the attitude there, doesn't it?) and this song especially struck a chord with me.

Here's the deal: since SB left, I've been really trying to evaluate myself.  In the first few weeks that he was gone, all I felt and in turn projected, was anger and sadness.  Once I started to create a new routine for myself, I was able to really process my feelings and see how my behavior impacted the world around me.  I consistently caught myself answering the proverbial daily workplace question "How are you today?" with "It's Monday" and a shrug, "It's Wednesday... we're halfway there," or "It's Friday!" with a happy dance.  I found that I was really just slogging through the weekdays to get to the weekends to regroup.  This process brought me to the realization that I really don't need to slog through the week.  I started to take pleasure in the little things: one of my cacti starting to grow a new paddle, one of my students saying something ridiculously funny (We invented "popcorn tacos" last week while talking about junk food.  Just say that phrase 10 times fast and try not to laugh.), making a new recipe.

So, while I am still totally open to all of the extra joy that comes with Fridays, today, I'm taking my hat off to Mondays.  It doesn't all have to be doom and gloom!
