Earth Month and 1 Piece Each...

Wednesday, April 15, 2020

Earth Month, generally-speaking, is a great time to re-evaluate the way you live and make some eco-friendly changes.  This year, because the world has changed so much in a short time, these sustainable alterations to your day-to-day may not be on the forefront of your mind.  However, in the case that working from home has gifted you with any extra time or if having your kids home from school suddenly means that you're spending time outside, I'd like to encourage you to do a little cleaning up!

In the last month, we've seen the canals in Venice re-fill with marine life, and just the other day I read an article about over one million sea turtle eggs being laid on beaches in South America.  This quarantine is scary, but it is also a great time to take into perspective what a negative impact humans have had on our planet.

If you've noticed lots of litter on your now-daily walks or want to give your kids a bit of a hands-on science lesson on the eco-system and they way that they can impact it, I highly encourage you to wear gloves, get a bucket, and pick up the litter that you come across while you are out reconnecting to nature.  See what sorts of items you find most frequently and brainstorm ways to eliminate those items from your life!  The world is changing.  Why not instill some positive changes?

These photos are from a beach cleanup that SunStars and I did while visiting my dad in Ventura, California last winter and were inspired by a partnership with 1 Piece Each, a non-profit focused on educating and saving planet earth.  We had intended to do more beach cleaning over spring break, but didn't get the chance, as we had to cancel our trip due to the quarantine.  These photos are a good reminder of a simple way to enjoy being outside while also helping to improve the planet.  Take a look at all of the wonderful work 1 Piece Each has been doing over the years and maybe even consider hosting a cleanup of your own
